Our Community Work

For more than three decades, Robert and Jeanette Totten have been active contributors to civic life in the Cayman Islands. Their community work has focused on youth development, civic leadership, and volunteer service — extending well beyond their professional roles in real estate and engineering to shape lasting institutions and opportunities for residents.

Champions of Youth Sport and Little League Development

In the early 1990s, Robert Totten emerged as a central figure in establishing modern Little League baseball infrastructure on Grand Cayman. As an engineer by trade, he took on the planning, design and project management of what became known locally as the Cayman Islands Little League Field of Dreams — a four-field complex near George Hicks High School that transformed the island’s youth baseball scene and drew praise from players, parents and community members alike. In the historic newspaper clipping above, Robert’s leadership in delivering this facility is chronicled, noting his role as the “point man” for the project.

Robert’s involvement was not limited to construction: he served as a Little League coach, league president, and hands-on volunteer for fundraising activities, including ticket sales and annual raffles that supported ongoing operations. The commitment to Little League work was recognised by the Cayman Compass awards programme, where Robert and Jeanette were named recipients of the George Rivers Award for community ethos in 1999.

Jeanette Totten also played a formative role in Little League administration. She served as commissioner of the Cayman Islands Little League Association, bringing organisational leadership and support to youth sport. Her community involvement with youth athletics complemented her extensive professional engagement in local service organisations.

Founding Support for YMCA and Civic Organisations

Both Robert and Jeanette are founding members of the Cayman Islands YMCA, an institution dedicated to youth development, healthy living and community engagement. Their volunteer hours in establishing and supporting the YMCA have been noted in organizational histories and professional profiles.

Leadership in Professional and Civic Boards

Jeanette has also distinguished herself with long-standing service within the Cayman Islands real estate community. Over more than 30 years with the Cayman Islands Real Estate Brokers Association (CIREBA), she has overseen various committees and governance roles. Jeanette was elected as the first woman president of CIREBA, serving multiple terms and helping shape professional standards for the industry on island.

Robert’s professional history spans more than 40 years in engineering and construction, with more than 30 of those years in the Cayman Islands. His background in civil and construction engineering has given him a unique perspective on local development and community infrastructure, both through private practice and volunteer leadership in civic projects.

Enduring Local Impact

Across volunteer roles, civic leadership and decades of engagement, Robert and Jeanette Totten’s community contributions have helped shape recreational opportunities, professional organizations and service institutions in the Cayman Islands. Their legacy in Little League sport and in establishing community assets such as the Field of Dreams complex remains a reference point for grassroots development on island.
